The fashion world’s newest fixation? Meet the sassier, more embellished cousin of the original patch that we grew to know and love way back in the day. Leave it to designers to recapture the essence of our childhood – sitting in our parents basement, ironing funky patches with flowers and peace signs onto our denim jackets and pants because it was the ‘rad’ thing to do.
Designers this season have taken the look up a notch – this isn’t your middle school ‘do-it-yourself’ project anymore, doll. They’ve taken the trend from the basement to the runways with their enviable interpretations of ‘the patch’, as it was meant to be. From playful to statement patches, embellished to the max on decorated denim – we’re totally digging the revival. We spotted it on the runways of Gucci and McQueen, Pucci and Marc Jacobs, and it’s blossomed in the collections of more affordable retailers like H&M and Zara. However, don’t shy away from the DIY – it’s a great way to refresh pieces in your closet that you haven’t styled in a while – from handbags and leather jackets, to your worn out denim jeans. Go on the hunt for unique, embellished patches at local vintage stores and flea markets, and create a piece that is entirely your own.
New Creative Director Alessandro Michele took the reins at Gucci introducing a line of Retro Resort Wear for his Cruise Collection ’16. Patches dominated the runways, from embroidered and beaded, to pailletted and bejeweled. Leather and chiffon dresses were richly adorned with florals, snakes and bees; flats like the Princetown Floral Jacquard Mule Slipper (pictured) gave us some serious shoo-woo; while the signature Dionysus bag (pictured) was heralded as the next ‘it’ accessory and shot to the top of many a ‘watch list’. Ours included.
# 2 Dolce & Gabbana
This Italian duo can do no wrong. Seriously! Talk about two guys, who know exactly what women want. Season after season they’ve charmed us with their insight and ingenuity, and their latest collection has rekindled our long-standing love affair with the brand. Adding their own twist to the latest patch mania, D&G models strutted down the runway styling SS ’16 garments embroidered with phrases and souvenir images that were feminine, vibrant, and so very Italia. Think playful striped dresses in bright red and yellow embellished with patches of gondoliers, sea bathers, Italian monuments, florals and phrases like ‘Italy is love’; silk printed headscarves; and jewel entrusted handbags. In short, we could use a little Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in our life. Who’s with us?
# 3 Marc Jacobs
The latest collection by Jacobs was an homage to good old 50’s Americana, with rockstar edge. Models, with attitudes to kill, donned red, white and blue ensembles down the runway – think Varsity jackets and long denim skirts embellished with pins and patches shaped like stars, pill boxes, clapperboards and other symbols worthy of true Hollywood flair; preppy tennis vests paired with tartan trousers; American flag accessories and hand bags. Our first impression… if Grease and The Walking Dead had a baby, this would be it. What do you think – love it or hate it?
